Funding for Primary School PE and Sports

The government is providing an annual funding. The aim of this funding is to improve the Physical Education (PE) and Sports programs offered by primary schools, and is provided jointly by various governmental departments, including Education, Health and Culture, and Media and Sport.

Although the funding will be allocated to primary school head teachers, it will be ‘ring fenced’ – this means it can only be spent specifically on PE and sport in schools. You can read more about this under ‘Accountability’ below.

Purpose of funding

Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, though how they do this remains their decision.

This is how Christ Church plans to use the funding:

  • Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
  • Paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
  • Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
  • Running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • Buying quality-assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport
  • Providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs

Accountability

Since September 2013, schools have been held to account for how they spend their additional ‘ring-fenced’ funding. Ofsted will strengthen the coverage of PE and sport within the ‘Inspectors’ Handbook’ and supporting guidance so that both schools and inspectors know how sport and PE will be assessed in future as part of the school’s overall provision.

Schools will also be required to include details of their provision of PE and sport on their website, alongside details of their broader curriculum, so that parents can compare sports provision between schools, both within and beyond the school day.

How we will Raise the Profile of PE Using the Sports Grant

Previously we have used the Sports Grant to work alongside 'Sports 4 Your Community' to team their coaches up with class teachers.  The coaches worked alongside teachers to help them develop professionally and provide improved PE. This will have a lasting impact on the quality of Physical Education children receive, not just in classes taken by our existing PE specialist, but via the work done by teachers throughout the whole school.

We also continue to develop CPD with Specialist Dance and Gymnastic teachers teaching through the year groups a lesson a week and teachers being part of these lessons to to enable them to develop their skills within these areas.  Children from this have the opportunity to perform in front of audiences or attend after school clubs.

We focus on two sports per half term from years 1 – 6 (covering basic skills in the EYFS). There is an emphasis on fair play, handshakes, sporting behaviours and coaching techniques. The pupils get to experience a range of games and skills during each half term covering sports such as net ball, hockey, athletics, tag rugby, handball, tennis, football and basketball. We’re excited to improve our existing offering to get more children involved in traditional sports, as well as to introduce them to new ones they may never have had the opportunity to try.

The sports grant is also covering the cost of swimming lessons.  Each junior class goes swimming for one term a year, this provides excellent opportunity to teach life skills as well as develop skills to a high standard.

We are looking at during the last week of each half term holding an Intra-School Competition is held so pupils can develop their skills in a healthy, competitive sporting environment. KS1 and EYFS do a carousel of activities which are kept fun but with an element of competition

Achievements for 2021-2022 have been:

  • Increased participation in sporting competitions/festivals
  • Use of recently-installed outdoor gym equipment
  • Achievement of Silver School Games Mark.
  • Acquisition and introduction of new scheme of work
  • Delivery of House of Dance sessions across both Key Stages (this also provided CPD for staff).

  • Develop partnerships to ensure school maintains ability to sign post children and their families to sporting opportunities
  • Develop links with local sporting clubs (eg swimming club, basketball) and using opportunities to develop and enrich what the children have access to in school
